His background in investment management and roles within the Chandler Lodge Foundation and Southern California Sober Living Network complement his efforts to lead NARR towards fostering quality recovery environments nationwide. Dave’s national influence as a speaker and writer further underscores his commitment to recovery residences and their pivotal role in the recovery process. A series of studies on Oxford Houses suggest they promote a host of positive outcomes at substantially lower costs compared to standard continuing care after residential treatment. These outcomes include not only substantially better abstinence rates, but also increased rates of employment and lower rates of criminal recidivism.

Peer-Based Recovery Support

Throughout the 1990s, many treatment programs discontinued their social model elements, a distinct departure from today’s residential community approach. An example of a Level IV is a recovery residence that implements social model care in a therapeutic community. Chris Edrington has made significant contributions to the sobriety and recovery residence landscape. He founded St. Paul Sober Living and worked to create supportive recovery environments in Minnesota and Colorado, resulting in policy advancements within the industry. Chris is committed to improving the accessibility and quality of recovery residences nationally and has held leadership positions in co-founding NARR and serving as Past President of the Minnesota Association of Sober Homes. Chris’s approach to “Social Selling,” fostering genuine community relationships within the recovery sphere, mirrors his belief in transformative engagement.

Opioid Response Network

These individuals get job experience for a year, the training and support needed to Alcoholics Anonymous become Certified Peer Recovery Specialists (CPRS), and receive educational grants. VARR  has grown to include four full-time staff members who all identify as persons in recovery from SUD and have experience working in recovery residence operations, including current Executive Director, Anthony Grimes. VARR continues to be dedicated to representing Virginia as their unified voice for recovery housing.

Darrell’s involvement in various boards and councils further reflects his dedication to enhancing recovery support frameworks.

Group Outings and Having fun in Sobriety

The National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) was founded in 2011 to fill a void in the field of addiction recovery services. Until then, there were no widely recognized best practices or quality oversight in the operation of recovery housing, which has been in existence since the mid-nineteenth century. Using input from 48 thought leaders across 12 states, NARR created a uniform language and standards for a wide range of peer-based housing and recovery residences that promote addiction recovery. The heart of all recovery residences is the Social Model, an operational framework that distinguishes these environments from other shared living spaces. This model emphasizes the importance of personal and collective responsibility for the safety and progressive health of oneself and others in the community. Strengths-based lived experience, peer leadership, participative governance, and community-based support networks are the foundational elements for lasting recovery.

We believe everyone should have a safe, supportive and nurturing home environment in early recovery. NARR’s work contributes recovery residence to a broader understanding of the critical role of residential recovery environments in the recovery process, and actively enhances the quality and availability of recovery residences.
